Why Barbershop?

The Barbershop style of singing is not just about the unique sound it produces.  It’s Members are drawn to sing in the Chorus for a number of reasons.

I have been singing for just over a year and I find it an uplifting experience. After a hard or

stressful day, singing at the club ends the day on a high.  The people are universally welcoming - not only at the club - but at all the venues and events we perform at.  When singing in public you find the positive response from the general public makes you feel ten feet tall.  Your family and friend’s initial shock at your new singing hobby when you venture into the comaradrie that is Barbershop - will be eased your response “join us”.

You may ask yourself the question ‘Why Barbershop?’  I too asked that question, that was until I turned up to a Sing Out Evening one Monday night.  As soon as the Chorus opened their mouths, I was hooked, and have been ever since that evening in October.  Not only has it revived my appetite for life, but also knowing that all involved, share my love of singing.  Although the weekly practice sessions are taken seriously, there is always time to have fun, and I always return home on a Monday evening in a fantastic mood.  I would recommend anyone, of any age, to give a try; I did, and have not looked back.

When I first came to the ‘Learn to Sing Course’ I was reasonably sure that I would enjoy the experience.  Enjoyment, however, is a superlative that does not do justice to the sheer fulfilment of singing in the Chorus and mixing with like-minded people both on a technical and social scale.  Even on days between Monday to the next I am constantly humming and singing to myself and sometimes to other people (however the bass line is not comprehended), which makes me feel good, and hopefully to those around me.  However, with the Convention coming up in May and the learning of new songs, things are getting even better!’

Going to  a ‘Learn to Sing Course’ has turned out to be one of my better decisions.  I have found great pleasure in making music which is done by voice alone, singing songs with words that have real meaning - sad, happy, romantic - Barbershop seems to cover every mood.  Coupled with the harmony they certainly stir ones emotions.  Added to this is the new friendships with people who have encouraged me in my learning.  I would advise anyone to who likes to sing, to it make it a hobby.  Join in with the lads who are dedicated to what they do...’’come to Barbershop’’

I joined via the ‘Learn to Sing’ course in 2010.  Not knowing what to expect, I thought I’d give it a try, and I am so glad I did!  Joining the Chorus has been great fun and given me an insight in how to sing correctly, but with the addition of being able to hear this Chorus in full swing, week after week.  They really are a great bunch of talented lads and if you are looking to do something different, make new friends and be a member of this proud tradition, then Barbershop, The Heart of England Chorus style, is for you.
