Meet Our Musical Director.
The Heart of England Chorus are lucky to have an
experienced Musical Director in the guise of David Codd.
Meet the man who puts expression and musicality into the voice of the Chorus.
I first joined the Chorus in 1978 having read an article in a Readers Digest magazine. I found out that The Heart of England Chorus in Leicester was the nearest to me and I just walked in off the street on their practice night.
The welcome I received was fantastic and so friendly. When I saw the members turning up I have to admit that I was a little unsure about the whole thing as collectively, they didn’t impress me as members of a chorus. Not at all what I had in my mind!
Then someone took out what looked like a strangely shaped mouth organ and sounded a note, silence fell and then in response to the conductor they all began to sing in harmony.
The hairs on the back of my neck tingled and I was completely overwhelmed by the sound that surged around me.
The wonder of it all was that how could these men produce a sound that belied their numbers?

“The welcome I received was fantastic and so friendly”

Musical Director
(noun) Is the person who decides what they (the chorus) will sing and how they sing it. He/she usually conducts as well.
Through various changes in the Club I moved from being a baritone to Musical Director when the then MD left. For personal reasons I left the Club and had a ten year gap, although I did become involved with a ladies choir for a few years.
I attended The Barbershop Musical Directors College to improve my knowledge and technique and joined The Heart Of England Chorus in January 2010 as MD.
I believe that there is no better hobby that is so rewarding. I encourage comedy and fun as well as hard work to sing confidently, with discipline, accuracy and enjoyment, so that our performance is enjoyed by both the audience and the chorus members alike.
